A sponsorship visa becomes the most preferred option when it comes to inviting a spouse or common-law to Canada. If someone is above 18 years old and has a valid relationship with you, your spouse, a common-law, or conjugal partner is eligible for sponsorship.

As you know, your spouse is someone legally married to you according to your country's regulations. But a common-law partner is someone living with you for more than 12 months, while a conjugal partner is permanent but not married.

In most cases, a dependent child is necessary to be sponsored with a spouse or any partner. A sponsor with two or more children must submit separate application forms for each child. However, you cannot sponsor a child born in Canada.

For example, a child born after you get Canada PR will be considered a Canadian citizen only. That child may not require sponsorship.

A sponsorship visa for parents or grandparents is quite different when compared to a visa for a spouse and children. An applicant must show proof of financial stability for sponsoring their parents or grandparents.

From medicines to accommodation, you are responsible for all the expenses associated with the family members you sponsor.

Minimum Age

Whether you’re a registered
Indian or PR, any applicant looking to apply for a
sponsorship visa must be at least 18 years old.

Canadian Status

Only a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (PR),
or Registered Indian can sponsor the
visa of their relative.

Meet the LICO

Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) is a qualification standard for income stability. If you’re sponsoring any of your loved ones, you must
meet LICO to be eligible.

No ‘Bad Faith’

According to Regulation 4 of IRPR, the relationship for a spouse visa require no 'Bad Faith' relationship. It means the relationship should be real rather than just for getting Canada PR.
